Nicola Yoon has an undeniable talent for writing about the addictive first stages of love. In The Sun is Also A Star, as in her other novel, Everything Everything, she describes falling in love with such intoxicating detail that you find yourself floating along, pulsing with serotonin as if YOU’RE the one holding hands for the first time. Natasha and Daniel get so lost in each other that nothing else – even life-altering, heartbreaking events – can distract them. Readers that have experienced love get swept up in the nostalgia of those first few moments; younger readers on the cusp get lost in what’s still to come. Love is a complicated language, and Nicola Yoon is a translator. There are many other pieces to Sun that work – a strong female heroine more interested in science than destiny, a thoughtful male love interest that actually admits to thinking and feeling things (imagine that!), snapshots of immigration, culture clash, mental health, and the American dream – but what really stands out is the Love, with a capital L. The Sun is Also A Star could be a Netflix romcom drama. Find a comfortable place to binge while giggling and blushing. #nicolayoon #thesunisalsoastar #bookreview

  1. I read this book and unfortunately, I didn’t like it as much as I’d hoped. I was very put off by the choppy chapters and the constantly changing perspectives, and the chapters that were pieces of history or explanations felt squeezed in randomly throughout the story. It just didn’t work for me :/

    1. I hate that feeling, when you’re so sure you’re going to love a book and then, when you read it, it just doesn’t click! I can definitely see what you mean about the chapter length and the perspective changing. What are your favorite YA love stories?
