Coming Soon: 5th Grade Book Club – The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown

WHO: 5th grade readers, coders, programmers, and any friendly robots that want to join! As always, this book club is completely optional. (And psst – The Wild Robot makes a perfect read aloud. Parents, reading this one together could be a fun way to cozy up in the cold!)

WHAT: A Robot Club – featuring a book! All November and December long, while readers are enjoying The Wild Robot, an illustrated novel by Peter Brown, Computer Science Coordinator Kim Wilkens and I will be turning the library into a robotics wonderland. 5th graders will see robotics activities and challenges all month and as a grand finale, will have the opportunity to host a robotics-themed pop-up Makerspace for other LV students at 7:30 AM on Tuesday, December 12. Later that day, we will meet in the library during lunch for a book discussion and pizza.

The Wild Robot is a novel about Roz, a robot that wakes up to find herself stranded on a desert island. She does not know how or why she is there, but she knows that she must adapt to her surroundings in order to survive. Peter Brown’s first middle grade novel has been delighting audiences since its release in April 2016, and has been named a starred and notable book by professional resources like The American Library Association, The New York Times, Kirkus, and School Library Journal. Copies of the book will be available from our school library and the public library, and are also available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other bookstores.

WHEN: The book club will take place during 5th grade lunch on Tuesday, December 12. The robotics-themed pop-up Makerspace will take place before school that day from 7:30-8:20 AM.

WHERE: The Learning Village Library!

WHY: Do you ever need an excuse to talk about books and play with robots? 🙂 Happy Twelve Days of Tech-mas, everyone!

See you there, fifth grade!

  1. We listened to the audio book over the Winter break, and it was a captivating experience for all us – 2nd grade, 7th grade, and both adults. I hope he writes a sequel, we are on tenterhooks to know if Roz makes it back!
