It must be hard for a young writer to follow a smash hit first novel. So I was rooting for Rebecca Stead when I started Goodbye Stranger – but the cheering didn't last long. This vague and disorienting story brushes over lots of issues without actually dealing with any of them, including heavy hitters like sexting and bullying, each of which deserve to be written about with more care. The characters left me wanting, and I was confused by plot lines that never seemed to take off.
