Countdown to Library

Transitions are tough, ya’ll. Especially when you’re five.

This year, I’m trying something new with the transition into library class. We’ll meet in the doorway, count down together, and make time for a one-one-one greeting before we make our way inside. Because all the wonder, love, and magic in the world can’t reach you if your head and heart are somewhere else.

I’m hoping that setting these few moments aside to transition together will help my little readers feel safe, excited, and ready for library class. I’m also looking forward to that special greeting each week: I have a tendency to get excited and skip this step, but I know that just a quick hug, handshake, fist bump, and/or extra second of eye contact can feel like magic in the middle of a busy day!

Fun fact: My kindergarteners march around the library every week to this song, the same one that I marched to as a kindergartener in MY elementary school library! Do you use any special routines to welcome students to your class?
