November is Picture Book Month! As a part of our Picture Book Month celebration, the Johnson Elementary School Learning Leopard Library blog is searching for the best picture books around. I asked some of our staff members to share their favorite picture books with me, so that I could share them with you!
Ms. Wright’s favorite picture book is The Water Hole, a beautiful journey into the jungle with author and illustrator Graeme Base. This picture book falls into the category of a concept book, which means that it was written with the purpose of teaching younger readers a concept like counting, colors, or telling time. The Water Hole is a counting book, using beautiful illustrations, paper cutouts, and simple wording to help readers learn their numbers between one and ten. From one rhino to ten kangargoos, this famous story combines the counting concept with a lesson in ecology and conservation. Published in 2001, this is one of Graeme Base’s most beautiful picture books.
