Second grade students continue working on their Library Advertisement posters. Each group is creating a poster to advertise their assigned section of the library. I asked students to consider: What makes your section of the library exciting? What makes it special? Why should people check out from your section? Once all of our posters are finished, all of second grade will vote on their favorites. The winning posters will become a permanent part of our library decorations!

Students out and about in the Johnson library reading, sharing, and checking out books. Thursday checkout day is one of my favorite days of the week – not only do I get to see almost every student in the school, but I love seeing how passionate our students are about their new checkouts!

Third grade students earned a dance party after rocking their reference tools pretest. Imagine the crazy dance moves we saw to Pharrell’s Happy!

DSC00918For Fire Safety Week, our pre-school and kindergarten classes learned all about Fire Safety. We watched a Fire Safety video, read about life at the fire house, and even completed a Fire Safety Scavenger Hunt around the school. In our scavenger hunt, we had to find sprinklers, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire hydrants… as we found each item, we colored the picture and discussed why it is important for fire safety. We even took our turns wearing a fire hat and talking about how to stop, drop, and roll!

Wednesday, October 8 was National Walk to School day! Johnson students met at Forest Hill Park to set out for school on foot. We had a beautiful, cool, misty morning to walk through the park. I was lucky enough to walk with first grade, and we had a blast laughing, singing, talking, and even taking selfies on our way to school.

This Wednesday, all of Johnson’s staff and students gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the official kickoff of our Book It reading incentive! Pizza Hut’s Book It reading incentive is a program designed to motivate struggling and reluctant readers – but passionate readers love it, too! Keep your eye on the blog to learn more about Book It and the way the program is taking Johnson by storm.

Another Johnson student proudly displays his used books that he has decided to donate to the library for other students to enjoy. The kind and selfless nature of Johnson’s students continues to amaze me everyday!

Thursday night, the amazing Johnson PTO threw a Fall Festival that our students will never forget! With a huge buffet of homemade food, families came for dinner but stayed for the awesome attractions. Johnson staff member Waverly Minor rocked the blues with guitarist Tony Bruno, and had students and parents dancing all evening long. Acrobats hung from the trees, walked on stilts, and showed off their amazing skills! I had a great time visiting with parents and students. Thank you, PTO, for putting on such a great party!
