Just as the beginning of the summer means pumping tires, checking helmets, and tying shoelaces, the end of the summer means something certain for Books on Bikes, too – our big summer finale. After a summer full of giving out books to read and popsicles to eat, we wanted to celebrate the thousands of books that found homes with some of the kids we love most.
This year’s Books on a Bus event was bigger and better than ever. Each year, we stuff a school bus with teachers, books, and popsicles, and go around to visit students in each of our neighborhoods – all in one night! Not only do we get to give out one last story, but the visit helps to get students excited for the first day of school, and to let them know how excited their teachers are to welcome them back. We were greeted with so many smiles counting down the days – and in some cases, the hours! – until they could get back into the classroom. Hopefully, the books they received from Books on Bikes this summer helped them to practice their reading skills while school was out, so they can jump right back in to their work becoming stronger, more confident readers.
