What is your biggest dream? And how would you feel if you shared it, and someone said, “You can’t do that”?
Mae Among the Stars sparked out of this world conversations with kindergarten and first grade this week. We are having so much fun learning about Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to go to space! I love that this book keeps things simple but leaves the door open for big conversations about little dreamers being treated differently because of their race or gender (I let my students lead the way, and they determined where our discussion went). We followed up with more Mae research and a kid-friendly biography video, for a perfect day of inter-planetary fun.
Black History Month is important, and I’m working on creating a more meaningful and engaging experience for my students this year. Learn more, and follow along, here.
